Chairman of LSHA, Dr. Mujë Buçpapaj, Receives President of the Association of Albanian-American Writers, Adnan Mehmeti

LSHA and the Association of Albanian-American Writers Strengthen Cooperation to Promote Albanian Literature

Tirana, August 19, 2026 — At the temporary premises of the League of Writers and Artists of Albania (LSHA), located at the Nacional Cultural Center in Tirana, its Chairman, Dr. Mujë Buçpapaj, held an official meeting with Adnan Mehmeti, President of the Association of Albanian-American Writers, Editor-in-Chief of Pena, the association’s literary journal, and founder of Adriatic Press.

The meeting took place in an open, cordial, and constructive institutional atmosphere and focused on developments in Albanian literary life in the diaspora, strengthening relations among institutions and organizations representing the Albanian literary community, and advancing joint initiatives for the international promotion of Albanian literature and culture.

During the meeting, Adnan Mehmeti presented the library of the League of Writers and Artists of Albania with several of his most recent publications issued in the United States, including Authors and Works, devoted to members of the Association of Albanian-American Writers, as well as several issues of Pena. These publications will become part of the LSHA library collection, representing a valuable contribution to the preservation and documentation of contemporary Albanian literary production in the diaspora.

The discussion also highlighted the historic role of the Association of Albanian-American Writers, founded in 2001 on the initiative of Prof. Dr. Gjekë Marinaj, its first president. Over the years, the organization has benefited from the contributions of prominent figures in Albanian letters, including the late Prof. Naum Prifti, Ramiz Gjini, Dalan Luzaj, Raimonda Moisiu, and Mëhill Velaj. The association is currently led by the distinguished writer Dr. Yllka Filipi.

The Albanian Book Fair in the United States: A Project of National Significance

A substantial part of the discussion was devoted to the Fifth Edition of the Albanian Book Fair in the United States, scheduled to take place in October. In addition to the Association of Albanian-American Writers, this year’s edition will be co-organized by the League of Writers and Artists of Albania and the Writers’ League of Kosovo.

Dr. Mujë Buçpapaj welcomed the initiative and expressed his satisfaction that LSHA will participate as a co-organizer. He described cooperation among the three institutions as an important step toward establishing a more consistent and coordinated framework for Albanian literary life both in the Albanian-speaking world and throughout the diaspora.

In his view, the Albanian Book Fair in America should not be regarded merely as a periodic cultural event, but as a project with a long-term vision and strategic national significance. In an era of globalization and rapid transformation within the publishing and book industries, the fair has the potential to develop into an important platform for Albanian cultural diplomacy.

In this broader perspective, the fair could become a sustained meeting point for authors, publishers, translators, universities, libraries, media organizations, and Albanian and American cultural institutions.

The book is one of the most enduring forms of collective memory and one of the most effective instruments for preserving and transmitting cultural identity,” was emphasized during the discussion, underscoring the principle that, for a nation with such an extensive diaspora as the Albanian nation, cultural and literary policy cannot be confined within the administrative borders of the state.

From this perspective, the Albanian diaspora should be regarded as an organic component of the national cultural space, while the Albanian Book Fair in the United States should be conceived as a long-term cultural institution, rather than simply an annual literary event.

Dr. Buçpapaj expressed LSHA’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the Association of Albanian-American Writers and the Writers’ League of Kosovo, with the shared objective of promoting Albanian literature, the Albanian language, and the values of Albanian culture wherever Albanians live and create.

Adnan Mehmeti: Institutional Cooperation Will Continue and Expand

For his part, Adnan Mehmeti, President of the Association of Albanian-American Writers, expressed his appreciation for the visit to Tirana and for the meeting with the leadership of LSHA, emphasizing in particular the prospects for further institutional cooperation.

He congratulated Dr. Mujë Buçpapaj on his election as Chairman of the League of Writers and Artists of Albania and expressed confidence that his experience in literature, literary scholarship, publishing, and cultural affairs would contribute significantly to the reorganization and strengthening of the institution.

Mehmeti also commended Dr. Buçpapaj’s literary and academic work, regarding his international experience as a poet, scholar, and publisher as an important asset in strengthening LSHA’s role in promoting Albanian literature and the arts in Albania, Kosovo, the diaspora, and the wider international cultural sphere.

He expressed particular satisfaction with the participation of LSHA and the Writers’ League of Kosovo as co-organizers of the Fifth Edition of the Albanian Book Fair in the United States, stressing the importance of further coordination and of developing joint initiatives among Albanian writers’ organizations on both sides of the Atlantic.

Visit to the Nacional Cultural Center

As part of his visit to Tirana, Adnan Mehmeti also visited the Nacional Cultural Center, where he was introduced to the activities of Radio Nacional, the editorial offices of the literary and cultural newspaper Nacional, Nacional Publishing House, and the Nacional Institute of Studies, as well as the Nacional Bar-Café, conceived as a meeting and communication space for Albanian writers, artists, and journalists.

He also visited the temporary premises of LSHA, which the Buçpapaj family has made available free of charge to the Albanian writers’ and artists’ community, as a contribution to the institutional revival and consolidation of the organization.

During the visit, Mehmeti commended the work of the literary and cultural newspaper Nacional, highlighting its editorial quality and the significant role it has assumed in promoting Albanian literature, art, and culture for nearly two decades. He described the newspaper as an important forum for cultural communication and for the international recognition of Albanian creative work.

He also expressed particular appreciation for Nacional Publishing House, its work in publishing and promoting Albanian authors, and its contribution to preserving, disseminating, and advancing the values of Albanian literature and culture.

The meeting and visit unfolded in a warm, fraternal, and at the same time distinctly institutional atmosphere, reaffirming the commitment of both sides to transforming cooperation among Albanian literary organizations into a stable, coordinated relationship based on concrete projects in the service of literature, art, books, and Albanian culture.

Recognition of Adnan Mehmeti’s Contribution to Albanian Literary Life in the United States

Dr. Buçpapaj also placed particular emphasis on the contribution of Adnan Mehmeti as one of the distinguished figures of Albanian literary life in the United States. Over the years, through his visionary leadership and extraordinary dedication, Mehmeti has played an important role in sustaining Albanian literary life within the American diaspora, promoting Albanian-language books, and preserving the enduring ties of the Albanian creative community with its language, literature, and cultural heritage.

This mission has often been carried out under challenging circumstances and with limited resources, making his institutional and personal commitment all the more significant. Through the activities of the Association of Albanian-American Writers, the journal Pena, his publishing work, and a wide range of cultural initiatives, Mehmeti has helped establish an important space for communication, promotion, and recognition of Albanian authors in the United States.

At the same time, he is a distinguished poet, publicist, and scholar of Albanian letters, whose creative and research work reflects a sustained commitment to national culture and to its dialogue with the wider international literary world.

His contribution represents a compelling example of the role that an Albanian intellectual and creative figure in the diaspora can play in preserving cultural memory, advancing Albanian-language publishing, and strengthening the intellectual, spiritual, and cultural bridges connecting Albania, Kosovo, the Albanian lands, and the diaspora.

In this broader context, the meeting between the leadership of LSHA and the Association of Albanian-American Writers constitutes an important step toward strengthening institutional ties across the Atlantic and advancing a shared vision for the future of Albanian literature in a global cultural environment.
