THE LEAGUE OF WRITERS AND ARTISTS OF ALBANIA CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF THE DISTINGUISHED ALBANIAN PAINTER KUJTIM BUZA (1937–2026)
The League of Writers and Artists of Albania expresses its profound sorrow and deepest condolences on the passing of the distinguished Albanian painter, scholar, educator, and renowned figure of the visual arts, Kujtim Buza, who passed away on the evening of August 27, 2026.
With his passing, Albanian art has lost one of the distinguished representatives of a generation of artists who devoted their lives to creation, knowledge, aesthetic education, and the enrichment of the nation’s cultural heritage.
Kujtim Buza was a multifaceted personality of Albanian culture. For more than six decades, he built his artistic and intellectual life upon a profound relationship with painting, scholarship, and pedagogy, leaving a distinctive mark on the history of Albanian visual art.
He was a master of landscape painting, yet his landscapes were never merely reproductions of nature. On his canvases, nature was transformed into a language of feeling, memory, and identity. Light, color, space, and atmosphere assumed a distinctive expressive function, elevating the concrete image of a place into an aesthetic and spiritual experience.
Here lies one of the particular values of Kujtim Buza’s artistic legacy: he did not merely paint Albania; he sought to paint its soul through nature. The mountains, fields, cities, shores, and landscapes of Albania acquire, through his work, a second artistic life, becoming part of the visual memory of several generations.
His oeuvre embodies a distinctive dialogue with the tradition of Albanian painting and with the developments of modern art. His theoretical and artistic education, his pedagogical experience, and his knowledge of art history enabled him to look beyond the technical dimensions of painting and to pursue its deeper aesthetic and cultural meaning.
The son of one of the foundational figures of Albanian painting, Abdurrahim Buza, who originated from Geghysen in Tropoja and whose life and work were connected with Gjakova, Skopje, and Tirana, Kujtim Buza inherited a great artistic legacy. Yet, above all, he forged his own creative identity. If from his father he inherited a profound love for art and for Albanian subjects and traditions, he developed in his own work a distinctive sensibility, particularly in his treatment of landscape, light, and atmosphere.
This artistic family legacy represents one of the most remarkable examples of continuity within the Albanian creative tradition: two generations of the same family serving art through different artistic languages, yet sharing the same conviction that art is memory and identity.
Buza studied Art Theory and Criticism at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg from 1959 to 1961, and subsequently pursued his studies in painting at the Higher Institute of Arts in Tirana from 1961 to 1964.
This aspect is essential to understanding his artistic formation. He was not merely a practitioner of painting, but an artist whose creative work was grounded in a substantial theoretical and critical education.
A particularly important chapter in Kujtim Buza’s life was his institutional service. He served as Director of the National Gallery of Arts from 1966 to 1969, and for many years, until his retirement, he served as Secretary of the League of Writers and Artists of Albania for the Visual Arts, while also working as a pedagogue.
In these roles, he distinguished himself through his dedication to the development of artistic life and, particularly, through his support for young artists, despite the ideological restrictions and constraints of the time.
In this capacity, he was not merely an administrator of art, but also a bridge between generations. He possessed the rare ability to see in a young talent not only what that artist was, but what he or she might become. His encouragement and support of emerging artists constitute an important part of his human and institutional legacy.
For the League of Writers and Artists of Albania, his passing carries a particular sense of sorrow. Kujtim Buza was part of the history of this institution and of its artistic life for decades, during years marked by struggle and difficulty in defending literature and the arts against the ideological restrictions imposed by Socialist Realism as a single and obligatory aesthetic doctrine of artistic creation.
His name remains connected with an important period in which literature, painting, and the other arts coexisted within an institution that, for decades, stood among the most significant centers of Albanian cultural life.
Today, in the presence of his artistic legacy, words seem inadequate.
The brush that for decades gave life to Albanian light, landscape, and color has fallen silent. Yet the silence of the artist is not the end of his work. It is the moment when the work begins to speak for itself—beyond its author and beyond time.
Kujtim Buza will remain in the memory of Albanian art as an artist who transformed landscape into experience, color into emotion, and nature into a distinctive expression of national identity.
He will also remain in the memory of his colleagues, artists, students, and younger generations as a personality who believed in art, in creative labor, and in the value of human talent.
His works will continue to live where great artists never truly die: in the memory of culture, in the history of art, and in the eyes of generations yet to come.
In these moments of profound sorrow, the League of Writers and Artists of Albania extends its most sincere condolences to the family of the late painter Kujtim Buza, to his relatives, friends, colleagues, former students, and to the entire Albanian artistic community.
