On July 28, 1922, the United States of America officially recognized the Albanian state, establishing diplomatic relations that laid the foundation for a lasting friendship and a strategic partnership that continues to grow stronger 103 years later. This date is not just a diplomatic anniversary, but a symbol of the deep historical, political, and human ties between our two peoples.

A History of Early Friendship

America was among the first supporters of Albania’s independence. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson defended Albania’s territorial integrity against post–World War I plans to divide it. This act was not merely a diplomatic move, but an expression of justice and respect for the national aspirations of the Albanian people.
In the following decades, relations between Albania and the U.S. were temporarily interrupted during the communist regime, but they were never extinguished in the hearts of Albanians. Albanians preserved a steadfast respect and trust for the United States, a sentiment that was powerfully demonstrated after the 1990s, when Albania embraced democracy and political pluralism.

A Strategic Partnership Today

The United States played a decisive role in the fall of the communist regime and in supporting Albania’s democratic reforms. During the transitional years, the U.S. not only provided direct financial and technical assistance, but also served as the main driving force behind Albania’s Euro-Atlantic integration, strongly advocating and sponsoring the country’s accession to NATO in 2009. Likewise, the U.S. was among the first nations to recognize Kosovo’s independence in 2008 and continues to be a guarantor of its security and sovereignty.
American contributions have been essential in strengthening the position of Albanians in the region, helping to build a pro-American, peace-loving nation committed to democracy and stability. Today, the American presence in the Balkans is a crucial factor for peace and a powerful deterrent against any attempts to destabilize the region or revive warmongering rhetoric.
The United States is one of Albania’s most important allies in the fields of security, defense, judicial reform, economic development, and democratization. As a NATO member and a country aspiring to play a constructive role in the region, Albania has found in the U.S. an unwavering partner that supports its efforts toward institutional stability and integrity.
American support for judicial reform, the strengthening of rule-of-law institutions, and the fight against corruption has been vital in Albania’s path toward a functional democracy and European integration.

A Bond Beyond Politics

We must also highlight the contribution of the Albanian-American community — a vibrant, successful, and highly active diaspora that serves as a bridge of friendship and cooperation between our two nations. This community has played a key role in deepening bilateral relations.
Moreover, the role of the United States in protecting the rights of Albanians throughout the Balkans has further solidified this partnership. NATO’s intervention in 1999, led by the U.S., was decisive in stopping ethnic cleansing and liberating Kosovo from Serbian occupation.

A Hopeful Future
As we mark 103 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, we are called not only to reflect on the path taken, but to commit ourselves to the future. Albanian youth today look to America not only as a model of success, but as a sincere and selfless friend that supports the building of a fairer, more developed, and more democratic society.
Albanian–American relations are more than diplomatic protocol — they are a story of solidarity, trust, and shared values. Let us continue to preserve this precious partnership and strengthen it for the generations to come.
